Mindfulness for the Workplace
“A 2016 study conducted by the National Business Group on Health and Fidelity Investments found that 22% of companies have mindfulness programs in place, and another 21% plan to add a mindfulness training component”. (Taylor, 2016)
There is a growing body of scientific research that demonstrates how mindful techniques can impact positively on many aspects of working life; reducing stress, improving focus and general wellbeing and the benefits in both retention and absenteeism. Productivity, creativity and job satisfaction are other areas that have been measured with good results.
Google have been one of the companies taking the business of mindfulness very seriously but other less cutting edge are coming on board too. Following a very successful trial at Intel, the company moved to roll out a mindfulness programme to over 100,000 of their employees across the globe, citing an improvement in levels of stress, wellbeing, improved ideas and insights, mental clarity, creativity, the ability to focus and the quality of relationships.
Another field adding weight to this growing enthusiasm is neuroscience:
Increase of grey matter in right cortex of Insula
Activates left prefrontal cortex (associated with happiness)
Deactiviation of the amygdala
GABA release
